ΤΟ ΜΟΝΑΣΤΗΡΙ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑΣ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΛΙΑΝΗΣ Είκοσι χιλιόμετρα περίπου από το Ηράκλειο, νότια του χωριού Βενεράτο, είναι το γυναικείο μοναστήρι της Παλιανής. Στη νότια πλευρά του ναού, κοντά σε πηγή υψώνεται χιλιόχρονο δέντρο, η «Αγία Μυρτιά». Σύμφωνα με τον θρύλο, η εικόνα της Παναγίας ζωγραφισμένη μέσα σε κλαδιά μυρτιάς, βρέθηκε θαυματουργικά μέσα σ’ έναν βάτο. Σ’ εκείνη τη θέση οικοδομήθηκε αρχικά εικονοστάσι για την εικόνα, στην οποία οι πιστοί προσεύχονταν. Κάποια μέρα τα κλαδιά που ήταν ζωγραφισμένα με την Παναγία, σαν να ζωντάνεψαν. Έγιναν αληθινά κλαδιά τα οποία φυτεύτηκαν, ρίζωσαν και δημιούργησαν ένα μικρό θάμνο μυρτιάς, στη ρίζα του οποίου τοποθέτησαν την εικόνα. Τότε χτίστηκε ναός και σιγά-σιγά δημιουργήθηκε Μονή, που ονομάστηκε Παλιανή. Τα χρόνια πέρασαν το μοναστήρι συγκέντρωσε πολλές μοναχές, η μυρτιά έγινε δέντρο σωστό κι έκλεισε στον κορμό του την εικόνα της Παναγίας. Οι καλόγριες την ονόμασαν “Αγία Μυρτιά”. Πιστεύουν ότι είναι ιερό δέντρο κι ότι θαυματουργεί σ’ όποιον σταθεί μπροστά της και με πίστη παρακαλέσει την Παναγία. Διηγούνται πολλά θαύματα που επιτελούνται σ’ αυτό τον χώρο. Λένε ακόμη ότι στα φυλλαράκια, άμα ξεραθούν, σχηματίζεται η μορφή της Παρθένου. Λένε επίσης, ότι από τα κλαδιά της ξεπετιούνται πάντα νέα βλαστάρια σε σχήμα σταυρού! Τα βράδια του Δεκαπενταύγουστου γίνονται παρακλήσεις και καθημερινά οι καλόγριες ψάλλουν μπροστά στη μυρτιά ύμνους στην Παναγία. THE MONASTERY OF VIRGINI MARY OF PALIANI Approximately twenty kilometers from Heraklion, south of the village of Venerato, is the nunnery of Paliani. On the south side of the church, near a spring, stands a thousand-year-old tree, "Agia Myrtia". According to the legend, the image of the Virgin painted in myrtle branches was miraculously found in a thicket. In that place, an iconostasis was originally built for the icon, to which the faithful prayed. One day the branches that were painted with the Virgin Mary, seemed to come alive. They became real branches which were planted, took root and created a small myrtle bush, at the root of which they placed the image. Then a temple was built and little by little a Monastery was created, which was called Paliani. As the years passed, the monastery gathered many nuns, the myrtle became a proper tree and enclosed the icon of the Virgin Mary in its trunk. The nuns named her "Agia Myrtia". They believe that it is a sacred tree and that it works miracles for anyone who stands before it and prays to the Virgin Mary with faith. Many miracles are said to have been performed in this area. They also say that in the leaves, if they dry, the form of the Virgin is formed. They also say that new sprouts in the shape of a cross are always thrown from its branches! On the evenings of the fifteenth of August, supplications are made and every day the nuns sing hymns to the Virgin in front of the myrtle.
