Η ΑΡΧΑΝΕΣ ΣΤΟΝ Β’ΠΑΓΚΟΣΜΙΟ ΠΟΛΕΜΟ Η θέση των Αρχανών αλλά και το γενναίο φρόνημα των κατοίκων της αποτέλεσαν τους κύριους παράγοντες για την ενεργή συμμετοχή του χωριού στα πολεμικά γεγονότα του 20ου αιώνα. Στη Μάχη της Κρήτης (Μάιος 1941 - Β ́ Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος) το Κέντρο ∆ιοικήσεως των Ελληνικών ∆υνάμεων εγκαθίσταται στις Αρχάνες, ενώ παράλληλα λειτουργεί πρόχειρο στρατιωτικό νοσοκομείο. Τον πρώτο χρόνο της Γερμανικής Κατοχής οργανώθηκε στις Αρχάνες το πρώτο κλιμάκιο κατασκοπείας στην Κρήτη το οποίο προσέφερε μεγάλες υπηρεσίες στον απελευθερωτικό αγώνα. Η παρουσία των ∆υνάμεων Κατοχής στις Αρχάνες ήταν ιδιαίτερα έντονη, αφού στο χωριό έδρευε Γερμανική Μεραρχία. Απο τις Αρχανες έγινε και η απαγωγή του Στρατηγού Κραιπε που ήταν πολύ σημαντική για την έκβαση του πολέμου. Μετά το τέλος του Β ́ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου η Κρήτη ξεκίνησε την προσπάθεια ανασυγκρότησης, σε μια εποχή που η υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα σπαρασσόταν από Εμφύλιο Πόλεμο. Εξαιτίας αυτής της περιόδου ειρήνης και του υπέροχου κλίματος της Κρήτης, το νησί σύντομα έγινε μία από τις πιο πλούσιες περιοχές της χώρας. Τα αγροτικά προϊόντα έγιναν ο βασικός τροφοδότης της οικονομίας του νησιού. Σήμερα ο τουρισμός σηματοδοτεί μια νέα εποχή οικονομικής άνθισης στο νησί. ARCHANES IN WORLD WAR II The position of Archana and the brave attitude of its inhabitants were the main factors for the active participation of the village in the war events of the 20th century. In the Battle of Crete (May 1941 - World War II) the Command Center of the Greek Forces was established in Archanes, while at the same time a makeshift military hospital operated. In the first year of the German Occupation, the first espionage unit in Crete was organized in Archanes, which offered great services in the liberation struggle. The presence of the Occupation Forces in Archanes was particularly strong, since a German Division was based in the village. The abduction of General Kraipe was also carried out from Archanes, which was very important for the outcome of the war. After the end of World War II, Crete began the reconstruction effort, at a time when the rest of Greece was torn apart by Civil War. Because of this period of peace and the wonderful climate of Crete, the island soon became one of the wealthiest areas of the country. Agricultural products became the main source of the island's economy. Today tourism marks a new era of economic prosperity on the island.
