ΚΟΥΡΗΤΕΣ ΟΙ ΠΡΩΤΟΙ ΚΡΗΤΙΚΟΙ Οι Κουρήτες ήταν πέντε αδέρφια: ο Ηρακλής. Πρόκειται για απλή συνωνυμία με τον γνωστό ημίθεο Ηρακλή, γιο του Δία, ο Παιωναίος, ο Επιμίδης, ο Ιάσιος, και ο Ίδας. Ο μύθος λέει ότι δεν γεννήθηκαν, αλλά φύτρωσαν από τη γη όταν την έβρεξαν τα πρώτα δάκρυα του Δία σαν μωρό. Το γεγονός αυτό συμβολίζει το ότι ήταν γηγενείς. Γι’ αυτό η παράδοση μιλάει για τους Κουρήτες ως πρώτους κάτοικους της Κρήτης και εικάζεται, χωρίς ασφαλή ετυμολογική εξήγηση όμως, ότι το όνομα Κρήτη και Κρήτες προέρχεται από τη λέξη Κουρήτες. Οι Κουρήτες, λέγεται ότι ήταν οι πρώτοι κάτοικοι της Κρήτης και δημιούργησαν το πρώτο πολιτισμό στο νησί. Σύμφωνα με τους μύθους οι Κουρήτες ήταν υπεύθυνοι για κάθε είδους ανακάλυψη της εποχής εκείνης και βοήθησαν στην οργάνωση της κοινωνικής ζωής στην Κρήτη. Οι Κουρήτες λέει ο μύθος ότι ήταν οι ιδρυτές των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων. Τα πέντε αδέρφια σε μία εξόρμησή τους στα δάση της Πελοποννήσου θέλησαν κάποια στιγμή να ξαποστάσουν. Για να διασκεδάσουν έκαναν αγώνα δρόμου μεταξύ τους. Νικητής αναδείχθηκε ο Παιωναίος και ο Ηρακλής για τη νίκη του τον στεφάνωσε με κλαδιά αγριελιάς, την οποία υποτίθεται είχε εισάγει ο ίδιος από το βορρά. Σαν ανάμνηση αυτού του γεγονότος κάθε πέντε χρόνια, εφόσον πέντε ήταν και τα αδέρφια, γίνονταν αντίστοιχοι αγώνες, οι οποίοι ο μύθος λέει ότι σταμάτησαν εξαιτίας ενός κατακλυσμού. That is why tradition speaks of the Kourites as the first inhabitants of Crete and it is assumed, without a secure etymological explanation, that the name Crete and Cretes comes from the word Kourites The Kourites are said to have been the first inhabitants of Crete and created the first civilization on the island. According to the myths, the Kourites were responsible for every kind of discovery of that time and helped to organize social life in Crete. Legend has it that the Kourites were the founders of the Olympic Games. The five brothers on one of their excursions in the forests of Peloponnese wanted to relax at some point. For fun they raced each other. The winner was Paioneus and Heracles for his victory crowned him with wild olive branches, which he himself had supposedly imported from the north. As a commemoration of this event every five years, since the brothers were five, corresponding matches were held, which legend says were stopped because of a flood.
