ΤΑΦΙΚΑ ΕΘΙΜΑ Η επίσκεψη του νεκρού στο σπίτι, ο θρήνος και η εκφορά επακολουθούσαν κανονικά. Στην Κρήτη, όση ώρα βρισκόταν το λείψανο στο σπίτι δε σκουπίζανε για να μη διώξουνε τους πεθαμένους που ήρθανε να συνοδέψουνε την ψυχή, ενώ συνήθιζαν να γεμίζουν το μαξιλάρι του νεκρού με φύλλα ελιάς. Το έθιμο της αποκοπής της κόμης κατά το θάνατο προσφιλούς προσώπου, εκτός της παλαιότητάς του, ήταν εξαιρετικά διαδεδομένο στην Κρήτη και συνεχίζονταν μέχρι πρόσφατα στα Σφακιά. Η εκφορά στην Κρήτη λεγόταν, όπως και σήμερα σε διάφορους τόπους, «ξόδι», οι νεκροφόροι «σηκωταί» το φέρετρο «κιβούρι». Με διάταγμα του δούκα της Κρήτης που εκδόθηκε το 1356, απαγορεύτηκε η συμμετοχή μοιρολογιστρών στην πρόθεση, εκφορά και κηδεία. Φαίνεται πως οι Κρητικοί συνήθιζαν πολυτέλειες στους νεκρούς τους, αφού απειλήθηκαν με αφορισμό, επειδή έθαπταν στα μνήματα χρυσό, ασήμι, μεταξωτά φορέματα και άλλα. Στην Κρήτη συνηθίζονταν, όπως και αλλού οι επιτάφιοι λόγοι, ο στολισμός των τάφων με λουλούδια και στεφάνια, οι επιτύμβιες στήλες σε πεζό ή έμμετρο λόγο και τα τακτά μνημόσυνα στους νεκρούς, όπως επιβεβαιώνουν ποικίλα έγγραφα και μαρτυρούν στίχοι του Ερωτόκριτου. Το πένθος έδειχναν οι προσφιλείς του νεκρού φορώντας μαύρα ρούχα, κρατώντας τα παράθυρα κλειστά, νηστεύοντας και μένοντας χωρίς περιποιήσεις.
