Η ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑ Η ΧΑΡΑΚΙΑΝΗ Ο τοπική παράδοση αναφέρει ότι στα παλιά χρόνια, τότε που η Βυζαντινή αυτοκρατορία απλωνόταν σε Ανατολή και Δύση, Βυζαντινή αρχόντισσα ανοίχτηκε με το καράβι της στο Κρητικό πέλαγος. Εντυπωσιασμένη από την άγρια ομορφιά τούτου του νησιού θέλησε να ρίξει άγκυρα, στον όρμο του Μπαλί. Ένας βοσκός από ψηλά είδε το ξενόφερτο καράβι που στην πλώρη του ανέμιζε ο Δικέφαλος αετός και έτρεξε να ειδοποιήσει τους συγχωριανούς του. Η αρχόντισσα περιπλανήθηκε ,θαυμάζοντας την ομορφιά τούτου του τόπου, ώσπου έφτασε σ’ ένα τεράστιο βράχο. Χωρίς να έχει κάτι ξεχωριστό τον παρατηρούσε με ενδιαφέρον ώσπου σε μια σχισμή διέκρινε ένα αχνό φως. Έσκυψε έβαλε το χέρι της μέσα στη σχισμή και έκπληκτη είδε ότι στα χέρια της, κρατούσε την εικόνα της Παναγιάς. Συγκινημένη την σκούπισε από τα χώματα και την προσκύνησε. Οι ντόπιοι που είχαν καταφθάσει κι αυτοί στο σημείο αυτό, δεν πίστευαν στα ματιά τους, άφωνοι γεμάτοι χαρά, έπεσαν στα γόνατα να την προσκυνήσουν. Η αρχόντισσα τους παρέδωσε την εικόνα, με την εντολή να χτίσουν ναό και να την βάλουν μέσα . Επειδή ο χώρος γύρω από τον βράχο ήταν απρόσφορος και δυσπρόσιτος τους υπέδειξε χώρο λίγο παρακάτω για να χτιστεί ο ναός. Μάλιστα βρήκε και τους τεχνίτες που θα αναλάμβαναν το έργο. Τους έδωσε πολλά χρήματα και τους είπε ότι θα φύγει και σ’ ένα χρόνο ακριβώς στις 15 Αυγούστου που θα γιόρταζε η χάρη της, θα ξαναγύριζε, για να κάνουν την πρώτη λειτουργία. Από τότε κάθε χρόνο τον δεκαπενταύγουστο τιμούσαν την χάρη της. The noblewoman handed them the icon, with the command to build a temple and put it inside. Because the area around the rock was unsuitable and difficult to reach, he indicated to them a place a little further down to build the temple. In fact, he found the craftsmen who would undertake the project. He gave them a lot of money and told them that he would leave and in one year exactly on the 15th of August, when her grace would be celebrated, he would come back to do the first service. Since then, every year on the fifteenth of August they honored her grace.
