ΤΑ ΛΟΥΜΠΟΥΝΙΑ ΚΑΙ Ο ΘΡΥΛΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΡΧΙΕΡΕΑ ΚΑΙΦΑ Από τα πιο συνηθισμένα σαρακοστιανά του τόπου μας είναι τα λουμπούνια οι θερμοί των αρχαίων, τα λούπινα της κοινής. Η κατανάλωσης τους κατά την Σαρακοστή, περίοδο που συνδέεται με τα Ψυχοσάββατα δηλαδή την επικοινωνία με τους νεκρούς, διαιωνίζει παραδόσεις των αρχαίων μας προγόνων. Σύμφωνα με τον Λουκιανό, τα λουμπούνια ήταν μέρος των δείπνων της χθόνιας θεάς Εκάτης, δηλαδή θεότητας που σχετιζόταν με τον Κάτω Κόσμο. Φυτρώνουν στην επιφάνεια του εδάφους άσχετα με το βάθος που θα φυτευτούν για αυτό και η κατάρα που λένε ακόμη σε διάφορα χωριά όπως στον Άγιο Σπυρίδωνα όπου να σε ξεράσει η γη που ξερνά τα λουμπουνια. Δηλαδή να μην σε δεχτεί η γη όταν πεθάνεις. Πίσω από αυτή την κατάρα υπάρχει ανάμνηση παλιών παραδόσεων για τον Καϊάφα τον αρχιερέα που δίκασε τον Χριστό οι οποίες λένε πως: Οι Ρωμαίοι έβαλαν τον Πιλάτο και τον Καϊάφα σε ένα πλοίο για να τους οδηγήσουν στη Ρώμη και να τους δικάσουν. Όταν το πλοίο άραξε στην Κρήτη πέθανε ο Καϊάφα. Τον έθαβαν αλλά η γη τον ξέρναγε έξω όπως το λουμπούνι. Εφτά φορές τον θάψανε και πάντα η γη τον ξερνούσε. Στο τέλος τον πέτρωσαν ή κατά άλλη παράδοση τον ρίξανε στη θάλασσα στον Αφορισμένο του Μιραμπέλλου». Οι θρύλοι θέλουν τον τάφο του σε διάφορα μέρη της Κρήτης όπως κάπου προς το Παλαίκαστρο.
